I recently got my Tomtom VIA 1505TM yesterday, and having just became off the phone with all the (all to easy to reach & very friendly & helpful) customer care here’s what I wish I’d known before I bough this: it’s still in Beta and isn’t supported by many Tomtom’s infrastructure yet. For example, currently (April 5th 2011) you aren’t likely to believe it is on most in the drop menus on Tomtom’s website or as an option within the phone menu if you call customer satisfaction. More seriously, it might’t connect with Tomtom Home and that is the application that allows you to definitely do the enjoyment things Tomtom offer like downloading voices or other doodads to your device. I became really getting excited about customizing my GPS with some other voices and I’m sad I could’t make it happen. My business is assured that more than the course of this holiday season Tomtom sends updates towards VIA GPSes that could eventually allow them to join the party until then there may be not much support just for this product. I think it’s kind of weird to release a beta which has less functionality than the models it supersedes without clearly warning potential purchasers and so i’m penning this review today. Also i can’t obtain a carry case sized just to fit my VIA – a different shape to previous models as it attaches to my car using a different system. I’m told its a much better system question this really is my first GPS I wouldn’t know.

Hopefully with the end of the season (as I said, I’m penning this on April 5th 2011) this review will likely be obsolete but at the moment, if you buy this GPS today, you won’t be getting a fully supported device. I’m not happy at being previously lured into Beta testing Tomtom’s new product line, that is my first GPS and I paid $200 correctly, I desired an excellent experience right out of the box. Which is I’m just feeling a little sad about the whole thing, and also the charming customer service hasn’t made that go away.

The thing is that, it is a great section of engineering. It really is a piece of cake to setup and use. It functions within a fundamentally different method to previous Tomtoms, and you can utilize it though it may be connected to your laptop. Update, June 17th 2011: After by using this device a couple of months, I still believe that anyone hunting for a drama-free GPS should go and buy something different. The TomTom VIA series is still a rich method of obtaining drama – it isn’t compatible with TomTom Home, and also the MyTomTom software it *is* appropriate for is definitely AWFUL and hugely frustrating. I’ve owned this thing for months and tonight was the 1st time I have ever successfully were update it, and that has had me 120 minutes and far nailbiting (At some time it managed to wipe itself clean coming from all maps & I’d to totally reinstall everything. Fun.) Alternatively, it lets you do seem to have finally installed the excess voice I purchased for it the day I acquired it, (before I knew so it didn’t in those days support adding extra voices) in order that it are going to be interesting to view how that may figure out. Plus the TomTom website does now acknowledge the use of the VIA models, even though it still doesn’t offer much for them. Progress is it being expressed by TomTom to take the VIA series out in the general community of TomTom products but this is very much still a beta device and I do still wish I’d purchased a different GPS system.

Conversely it’s a nifty little thing, and I do enjoy deploying it. It features a completely intuitive interface, and it also gives excellent directions both spoken and so on the screen. It recalculates directions incredibly fast. It sticks on my windscreen perfectly. The traffic feature is great, and has helped me steer clear of many traffic jams, though sometimes the traffic feature just won’t load, which is a shame. As numerous others have stated it *does* take a number of minutes to the device to get the satellites (I needed thought this was simply because I sleep out inside sticks, in the center of a forest without having mobile phone reception even, however , if people are having problems it must be connected with it.) On the whole, I’ve enjoyed making use of it, but I do think We would have enjoyed it more easily’d bought an issue that became a fully functioning product and not simply a poorly supported beta.
